Choose anti-slip or textured tiles, particularly for wet zones, and aim for finishes rated R11 or above. Incorporate a slight slope in the installation for water runoff. Good drainage, joint maintenance, and regular cleaning will ensure safety and longevity.

Improper installation, including uneven sub-bases, incorrect mortar mixes, and skipping primer slurry, can lead to shifting or wobbling. To avoid this, ensure you use a level, stable bedding, a correct mortar ratio (4:1 sharp sand to cement), and a primer slurry on the back of each slab before laying. Though exceptionally durable, porcelain can still crack or chip due if exposed to heavy impact, structural movement, or poor installation. Staining, while less common, can occur from oil, rust, or organic matter. Prevention comes down to proper sub-base preparation, professional installation, sealing where needed, and prompt cleaning of spills. Most staining can be partially or completely removed with cleaners provided by Caledonian Stone due to the non-pours’ nature of porcelain, but due care to clean up quickly with oil and rust spills is recommended.

Porcelain is non-porous, which means natural growth is much slower and dirt adheres far less to the surface, making maintenance easier. However, it’s still important to look after your tiles properly. For general cleaning, a power washer can be used. Hot, soapy water can also be applied and brushed over the paving if required. Every 6–12 months, it’s a good idea to give your patio a deep clean to restore its original appearance. We recommend using the Nexus Ultimate Cleaner, supplied by Caledonian Stone. If there are any stubborn marks that cannot be removed with general cleaning, our aftercare experts at Caledonian Stone can advise on the correct specialist cleaner to use.
