Farley Castle is a 220 m² residential landscape transformed into interconnected, sun, oriented patios using refined porcelain paving. Three distinct zones, each with its own character yet unified under a sleek aesthetic, guide the eye toward a central water feature. The result is elegant, low, maintenance outdoor living with timeless appeal.
Client Brief
- Vision & Lifestyle: Farley Castle’s owners are dedicated “sun chasers,” keen to create spaces that offer comfort and light at various times of day.
- Key Challenge: Designing three individual patios that each capture sunlight while visually flowing together around a water feature.
- Desired Outcome: Contemporary, easy, care patios that blend into the landscape and cater to spontaneous outdoor enjoyment.

Design Intent & Product Selection
Three porcelain products were carefully chosen from Caledonian Stone to delineate the zones while maintaining visual harmony:
- Dovedale Pearl – A soft, marble, influenced tone lending elegance and brightness to the outdoor spaces.
- Cemento Grey – A contemporary concrete, style grey offering modern texture and depth.
- Dover White – A neutral yet intricate porcelain with a shade range to suit any garden.
Why porcelain was the perfect choice:
- Aesthetic clarity: Mimics natural textures with modern precision, embodying both simplicity and sophistication.
- Minimal upkeep: Fully vitrified porcelain resists staining, fading, frost, and moss, ideal for UK weather.
- Architectural sharpness: Rectified edges enable tight jointing and clean layouts, reinforcing a contemporary edge.
- Cohesive palette: The interplay of soft (Pearl) and mid, tone (Grey) porcelain creates visual interest without sacrificing unity.

Installation & Flow
- Patio Layout: Three patios were strategically placed to follow the sun’s path, each accented by a different material tone. Transitions between zones are seamless, anchored by the consistent surface finish.
- Paving Application: Each slab was installed using a fully bedded mortar technique, with tight 3–5 mm joints enhancing the minimalist look, mirroring the precision seen in Caledonian Stone’s LED, integrated steps project.
- Water Feature: Centrally framed by the paving layout, the water feature remains the visual heart of the design, uniting all zones.

Outcome & Feedback
The landscape now offers:
- Design cohesion: Dovedale Pearl and Cemento Grey contrast beautifully while maintaining a unified aesthetic.
- Functional versatility: Patio zones capture different sunlight exposures, providing year, round usability.
- Effortless maintenance: The porcelain’s durability and low porosity guarantee long, lasting beauty with minimal care.
Farley Castle’s transformation exemplifies how layering porcelain paving with thoughtful material choices can craft a dynamic, sun, embracing landscape. Anchored by a central water feature and executed with precision, the design marries functionality, elegant simplicity, and enduring practicality.
