In the Kent countryside, a 420 m² outdoor renovation aimed to bring the timeless elegance of limestone into a functional, modern landscape all without the upkeep typically required by natural stone. By using Windsor Limestone Dura porcelain, the project achieved an authentic limestone charm with contemporary durability and minimal maintenance.
Client Brief
- Location: Kent
- Design Goals: The client sought a natural limestone aesthetic but wanted to avoid the long-term maintenance associated with real stone.
- Solution: Porcelain paving that replicates limestone’s beauty while being more resilient and easier to care for.
- Project Size: Approximately 420 m² of outdoor area.

Design Intent & Product Selection
The choice of Windsor Limestone Dura porcelain was pivotal. It captures the essence of limestone with its warm, textured finish while offering the performance advantages of porcelain.
Why it was the perfect selection:
- Realistic natural stone look: Faithfully mimics limestone’s tone and texture, delivering aesthetic authenticity.
- Low upkeep: Unlike natural limestone, this porcelain resists staining, algae, and frost, and doesn’t require sealing.
- Structural clarity: Rectified edges and precision manufacturing create clean, attractive layouts.
- UK climate resilience: Built to withstand frost and weather fluctuations, ideal for Kent’s outdoor environment.
Project Execution
- Scope of bespoke work: The project required custom solutions including two external staircases, steps, and copings all crafted from the same Windsor Limestone Dura porcelain to ensure material consistency and cohesion.
- Installation approach: Slabs were installed over a properly prepared mortar base with tight jointing, achieving slick, no-fuss surfaces reminiscent of Caledonian Stone’s other precision-laid projects.
- Material continuity: The staircases and copings seamlessly matched the main paved areas, highlighting the versatility and bespoke capabilities of porcelain in complex design situations.

Project Impact & Feedback
The completed space offers:
- Aesthetically authentic: Delivers the understated elegance of limestone without the ongoing upkeep.
- Functional durability: Porcelain’s strength meant longevity and less worry, even on stairs and edges.
- Bespoke consistency: Custom staircases and copings matched perfectly with the main paving no jarring transitions.
