Using porcelain? – 3 Steps to Make Your Next Hardscaping Job Easy

Any hardscaping project comes with its fair share of challenges. Whether you’re dealing with sloping terrain, limited space or shade where your client wants sun, no amount of planning can solve everything ahead of time.

But, at Caledonian Stone, we want to make your life as easy as possible and while we can’t summon the sun or fit a square peg in a round hole, we can make sure you have all the installation accessories you need. We pride ourselves on being something of a one-stop shop for landscape designers, particularly when it comes to porcelain paving.

So, what can we offer?

Step One: How to prime your porcelain?

First things first, you’ll want to prime your porcelain (this is the case whether you’re working with natural stone or porcelain paving). The Nexus Porcelain Slurry Compound is an ultra-high polymer and fibre modified flexible primer.

Porcelain slurry is a mixture of water and clay that is applied to paving prior to laying them. It helps to create a durable surface that is resistant to staining and cracking. Slurry primer is typically made up of two parts – water and clay. Water is added to the clay so that it becomes thick enough to spread easily. Once mixed together, the slurry is then brushed onto the paving. After the slurry dries, it hardens into a solid layer that provides a protective barrier between the foundation and the paving stones.

Use before you start, to fill imperfections and create a smooth surface on which to lay your porcelain.

Step Two: How to cut porcelain with ease?

One of the best things about working with porcelain is that the slabs are all the same size and shape (which makes laying a whole lot easier). But, there will inevitably be times when you need to modify some of the slabs.

Porcelain is incredibly durable and hard wearing and so our Porcelain Diamond Cutting Blades are super thin (at just 2mm) to cut easier and faster. The strong bond material also drastically reduces any chance of chipping.

Abrasive or cheap diamond blades will often chisel, splinter and/or shatter the porcelain paving as it is being cut. Resulting in unsightly, amateurish cuts edges, or excessive waste as damaged and broken flags have to be thrown away!

Continuous rim blades are not divided into segments though they may have small, wide cooling slits that subdivide the blade. This means the ‘hammer effect’ that can occur when heavily segmented blades are used, is avoided.

The cutting edge of the best rims will have a relatively soft, smooth matrix embedded with the cutting stones. This ensures that the porcelain paving isn’t obstructed by an overly hard matrix and a better, cleaner cut is achieved.

Step Three: How to fill the gaps between porcelain paving slabs?

For filling the gap between paving slabs and setts, we stock Porcelain Grout. This quick and easy-to-use solution allows even novices to deliver the perfect joins.

So, there you have it. You can see how here at Caledonian Stone we can make your landscaping project that bit easier.
