Meet your sustainability requirements with porcelain

Porcelain manufacturers are prioritising the environment more than ever before due to government regulations, project requirements and a commitment to increase productivity by reducing waste.

And they’re not the only ones that are fine-tuning their sustainability strategies. At Caledonian Stone, we’re committed to preserving the world’s natural resources, for example by sourcing sustainable tiles from manufacturers that share our ethos.

Porcelain is a sound choice if you’re committed to the environment

By its nature, porcelain is an environmentally friendly flooring and cladding material. In fact, it’s so hardwearing that it’s recognised as having the longest lifetime potential of any building finish.

What about sustainability? How long will porcelain last?

Porcelain will last at least as long as the structure of the building – It’s almost totally inert, and does not produce any fumes or toxins even in the event of fire.

What about the eco footprint? What are the main ingredients in porcelain?

The main ingredients in porcelain are clay, common rocks like feldspar or quartz, and water – All are readily available in most areas, meaning that renewability is not an issue and CO2 emissions are lower as a result of lower transport costs.

What about cleaning needs? Are porcelain tiles easy to maintain?

Porcelain tiles are very easy to clean, with indoor tiles requiring an occasional mopping, and exterior tiles simply needing a power wash or a brush and bucket of soapy water – Low maintenance means low energy and chemical consumption.

And manufacturers are taking steps to make porcelain greener still

So even before you delve further into its green credentials, porcelain is a strong environmental option.

However, European porcelain manufacturers are taking additional steps – some prescribed, some voluntary – to ensure that porcelain maintains its reputation as the most sustainable tile choice:

  • Porcelain manufacturers are required by law to include a percentage of recycled content in their tiles.
  • All European manufacturers use at least some renewable energy in their facilities, whether this comes from the grid or their own solar or wind installations.
  • Some manufacturers have almost totally closed loop processes, recycling the waste materials from one batch of tiles into the next, as well as water, clays and unfired glazes.

Our commitment to sustainability helps you meet your environmental requirements

And it isn’t just the manufacturers who have sustainability requirements to meet, whether by design or choice. At Caledonian Stone, we’re determined to meet the highest standards, when it comes to the suppliers we use and the way we work. What’s more, we understand how crucial this issue is becoming for you.

Whether you’re looking for ways to make your business more environmentally friendly or you’re part of a public or commercial project that’s subject to environmental requirements, our commitment to sustainability will help you meet your goals:

  • We only supply porcelain from reputable European based manufacturers. As a result, not only are we aware of their sustainability standards, but we’re limiting the environmental impact of transportation.
  • The tiles we source are based on quality not cost. High quality manufacturers are committed to reducing environmental impact and optimising process, which means better tiles and minimal waste.
  • We recycle all our timber packaging,
  • Transportation efficiency is something we concentrate on and we always ensure trucks are full.
  • We monitor suppliers’ environmental status and policies.
